The True Story Behind Robert Eggers' "The Northman"

Based on a Historical Legend

The upcoming film "The Northman," directed by Robert Eggers, is based on the legendary tale of Amleth, a Viking prince whose story is believed to have inspired Shakespeare's "Hamlet." It is one of the most popular medieval Scandinavian stories and has been told in various forms for centuries.

The Legend of Amleth

The legend of Amleth first appeared in the 12th-century Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus' "Gesta Danorum" (The Deeds of the Danes). Amleth was a young prince whose father, King Horvendill, was murdered by his brother, Feng. Amleth feigned madness to escape execution and vowed to avenge his father's death.

Amleth's story was later adapted by François de Belleforest in his collection of tragic tales "Histoires Tragiques" (1570). It is believed that Shakespeare read Belleforest's version and was inspired to create his masterpiece, "Hamlet."

Robert Eggers' Adaptation

Robert Eggers' "The Northman" is a cinematic adaptation of the legend of Amleth. Set in 10th-century Iceland, the film follows Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) on his quest for vengeance after his father is murdered by his uncle, Fjolnir (Claes Bang).
