The National Flag of Bangladesh: A Symbol of Identity and History

Origins and Significance

The national flag of Bangladesh was first raised on March 2, 1971, at the University of Dhaka campus. It represents the aspirations and struggle for independence of the Bangladeshi people. The flag features a dark bluish-green field background, symbolizing the fertile countryside of Bangladesh, with a large off-center orange-red disk representing the sun rising over the country.

Official Adoption and Design

The design of the Bangladeshi national flag is based on a flag proposed by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation. The flag was officially adopted by the People's Republic of Bangladesh on January 17, 1972. The width-to-length ratio of the flag is 3 to 5.

Symbolism and Resemblance

The green background symbolizes the lush vegetation and agricultural heritage of Bangladesh, while the red disk represents the bloodshed and sacrifices made during the country's independence movement. The flag bears similarities to the flag of Japan, but the green background distinguishes it.
